EOS is the crypto-currency for the EOSIO blockchain. It is developed by block.one and not by a community.
The focus is on high performance and scalability and it is free to use. You just need to own enough of the EOS coin[1] related to the amount of resources needed by your application/contract.
The purpose is to accommodate smart contracts and distributed applications.
Delegated Proof of Stake is the consensus algorithm. Validation is done by only 21 nodes.
